From me as a photographer… “What I look for in a model”

I’m not a fashion, gravure, or erotic photographer, so I’m not a photographer of what people call “cute,” “good style,” or “sexy.” I don’t want a model to have a “good quality”. I think the most important thing is to have a “presence” that tells something just by being reflected in it. I don’t think the model in the photo here has a deep knowledge of art, but the presence that comes from being reflected in the photo is unparalleled, and in that respect, she is an excellent model.

写真家の私から・・「モデルに求めるもの」

私は、ファッションとかグラビアとかエロ系の写真家ではないので、世間でいうところの”可愛い”とか”スタイルが良い”とか”セクシーである”とか、そういう”消費文化”でしかないような”安易な素養”をモデルに求めてません。　そこに写り込むだけで何かを語ってしまうような「存在感」が最も大切だと考えてます。　ここに写るモデルは、アートに関する造詣が深いとは思われないが、写り込みからくる存在感は他に類を見なものがあり、その点において、モデルとしては非常に優れてます。

It is true that some models have an excellent sense of art and are well-versed in art. Since it is a joint work, it is ideal to collaborate with a model who has excellent senses.

結果としてよい作品になれば良いことですから、アートに関する造詣が深かろうがなかろうが、写真家にとってはどちらでもよいことではありますが、モデルの中には、芸術感覚に優れ、造詣の深いモデルがいることも事実です。　共同作品ですから、優れた感覚を有するモデルとの共同制作というのが理想ではあります。

I think anything is possible as long as (the model) is dignified in the photo. Then, it’s very difficult to tell (to the model) that “you’re dignified”.

（モデルが）凛とした姿で写り込んでいれば何でもありだと思ってます。では、何もって凛としているかを（モデルに）伝えることはとても難しいことで、媚びていたり、こうすれば受けが良いんじゃないか・・とか、安易なポーズをとるとか、、、そういうことでなければ良いと思います。
