To Break a Glass
I held it gently,
Cradled in my hands,
This glass heart of mine,
Fragile, trembling, like sand.
It sparkled once,
Caught the light just right,
Held my dreams, my hopes,
In reflections, so bright.
But then came the crack,
Silent, sharp, unseen,
A tiny fracture that spread,
Through moments in between.
The warmth turned to cold,
The shimmer to shade,
And in one trembling breath,
The glass heart decayed.
It shattered, it scattered,
Across a floor of night,
Pieces glistening like stars,
That lost their fight.
I try to gather them,
Bleeding fingers, aching soul,
But no matter how I try,
I can never make it whole.
For once a glass is broken,
No glue can seal the seams,
And so I let it lie,
In the ruins of my dreams.
